I have been exploring the writing of painter Agnes Martin after seeing her work again at the Monochrome exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Her attachment to perfection is difficult for me to understand. Especially given how imperfect and process driven her work is. But I guess that is the work these days, to hold two truths at once and make space for different ways of seeing something. I just hope we can hold these differences with care for each other. Equanimity is something that I’m using as a structure to hold on to as I navigate multiple truths - the ability to ground firm while chaos swirls.
This new series of wall pieces sits between the chaos and perfection. Titled after a phrase written by Agnes Martin, these works are woven on the same structure but with different materials, from knotted hemp twine to the softest of silk and cashmere. I played with how I thought about function, as well as form. The changes in repeated patterns create different outcomes. Imagine if this kind of thinking expanded to other parts of life?
I’m opening up my studio and participating in a few Eastside Culture Crawl related events over the next week, starting tonight! See all the details below.
For those of you who are out of town and can’t make the events, here’s a little peek at a group exhibition that I am so happy to be part of. I was responding to the theme “green.” These works are a conversation with the natural environment through abstraction.
Motion sensor light boxes consider the ground and surveillance – untended grass, things tossed, and things built. They reframe familiar and discarded things. Something unseen or overlooked is brought forward and offers a new viewpoint.
